Eating Places

Here are a few selected eating places in Katowice, that I have personally eaten in.

Złoty Osioł Wege Bar (Golden Donkey Veg Bar)

Address: Mariacka Tylna 1, Katowice
Opening times: Monday to Saturday 10:00 - 22:00 hrs Sunday 12:00 - 22:00 hrs

This is a vegetarian self-service restaurant is frequented by mainly young people and students although anybody of any age will feel comfortable there. Good "homemade" hot and cold food is provided with a mixture of cold natural fruit juices - all at good prices. There will usually be someone who speaks English and will guide you around the system or ordering a meal from the bar - so do speak English to the servers. Don't be put off by the rather plain appearance from the outside. It can get very busy between 14:00 and 16:00 hrs - but people are usually happy to share a table.

Złoty Róg Delikatesy (Golden Horn Delicatessen)

Opening times: Monday to Friday 07:00 - 18:00 hrs Saturday 08:00 - 14:00 hrs Sunday closed

This is a delicatessen that serves food that can be taken away - but you can also select food, have it heated up and you can eat it standing by small bars by the window. The food is excellent and cheap - ideal for a quick meal - if you get hungry on the go or can't be bother with a restaurant meal.

The shop assistants don't speak much English, but are friendly and you can usually get away with pointing at what you want and indicating that you want to eat the food inside. Don't forget that you often pay for food by weight in Poland.

Moodro bistro & cafe

Address: Dobrowolskiego 1, 40-205 Katowice (on the site of the Silesian Museum)

This bistro and cafe is an ideal place if you want a coffee, a snack or a full lunch. It's very handy if you are visiting the museum. The prices are reasonable. The same company also run a restaurant in a neighbouring building - although they do provide good meals - they are more expensive.

It's worth trying their Silesian Lunch which is available from 12:00 - 15:00 hrs.

Pijalnia Czekolady E.Wedel (Wedel Chocolate Shop and Cafe)

Address: 3-go Maja 30, 40-097 Katowice, Poland (inside Galeria Katowicka shopping centre on Level 0 - next to an exit to the railway station)
Opening times: Monday to Saturday 09:00 - 21:00 hrs Sunday 10:00 - 20:00 hrs

Wedel has been making chocolate products in Poland for 165 years. It is the oldest chocolate brand in Poland which started and continues to have its headquarters in Warsaw. Although, there are now a number of Wedel shops and Cafes in other parts of Poland - the one in Galeria Katowicka shopping Centre is one of the youngest, opening when Galeria Katowicka opened in October 2013.
